Sunday, August 29th marked the first bike ride up America’s Mountain. The event that called “Come Ride the Greatest Mountain in America!” featured riders from 10 different states.

Starting in Manitou Springs‘ Memorial Park, the route trekked 24.5 miles up the Pikes Peak Highway for a total gain of 7,700 feet to the 14,110ft summit of Pikes Peak.

A grueling climb no matter what condition a rider may be in, included paved highway transitioning to a packed-dirt road and strong winds above timberline.

An interesting note, the race’s official website has it labeled as “Assault on Pikes Peak – Ride Pikes Peak” yet the local newspaper, the Gazette, has it as Pikes Peak Assault…hmmm sounds like poor marketing to me.

Any readers ride yesterday? If so, share your experience in the comments below.

Even though it’s a brutal climb I totally want to ride this next year…on a mountain bike!

For results and commentary on those who rode in the race, check out the local Out There Colorado for more.
